Gracius Joseph Broinowski — The Birds of Australia

Gracius Joseph Broinowski (1837-1913) produced one of the most significant illustrated ornithological works ever published in Australia — The Birds of Australia, issued in parts between 1887 and 1891 and comprising six volumes of hand-coloured lithographic plates depicting the bird species of the continent. The publication represents a landmark in the history of Australian natural history illustration, combining scientific ambition with a distinctively colonial perspective on the extraordinary avifauna of the continent.

Broinowski was a Polish-born artist who arrived in Australia in 1872 and rapidly established himself as a natural history illustrator of considerable ability. His approach to bird illustration was both systematic and decorative, depicting species in naturalistic poses within suggested habitat settings rather than the formally isolated arrangements favoured by some earlier ornithological illustrators. The resulting plates have a visual vitality and warmth that distinguishes them from more strictly scientific treatments, making them among the most appealing antique Australian bird prints available to collectors.

The Birds of Australia covered a substantial proportion of the known Australian avifauna, with plates depicting parrots, cockatoos, honeyeaters, kingfishers, waders, raptors and the many other families that make Australian ornithology among the richest in the world. The hand-colouring of the lithographic plates — applied by skilled colourists working from Broinowski’s original drawings and from specimens in colonial natural history collections — gives the prints a vivid chromatic quality that reproduces well and displays attractively.

Broinowski prints are actively sought by collectors of Australian natural history art, by ornithologists and bird enthusiasts, and by those drawn to the decorative appeal of high-quality hand-coloured lithography. They represent an important chapter in the history of Australian scientific publishing and natural history illustration, produced at a moment when colonial Australia was developing its own tradition of scientific and cultural achievement.

Antique Broinowski bird prints are among the most recognised Australian natural history prints available in the collector market, valued for their historical significance, their decorative quality and their documentation of species that remain central to Australian natural heritage.
