Description:

Very rare engraving from “The first truly great American ornithology” (Bennett), from Alexander Wilson’s “American Ornithology” or “The Natural History  of the Birds of the United States.”

Artist:

 Alexander Wilson (1766 – 1813)

Regarded as the father of “American Ornithology”, Wilson gave great impetus to the study of American Birds. Born in Scotland, he sailed to America in 1794. He was profoundly able naturalist who lacked the financial resources to fulfill his dream of doing a definitive study on the subject. This series is from his rare work, “Illustrations of the American Ornithology of Alexander Wilson and Charles Lucian Bonaparte”.
