Artist:
George du Maurier (1834–1896) was a prominent Franco-British illustrator and novelist who chronicled the social dynamics and cultural anxieties of the Victorian era. Born in Paris, he initially pursued a career in chemistry before transitioning to the fine arts. Despite losing the sight in his left eye during his youth, he established himself as a premier social caricaturist after joining the staff of Punch magazine in 1864. His satirical illustrations offered sophisticated commentary on the British middle class, the nouveau riche, and the Aesthetic Movement. Furthermore, his cartoon captions successfully introduced several enduring idioms into the English lexicon, including the phrase “curate’s egg.”
