Description:
Scarce detailed map of Asia extending from India to New Guinea, with an inset of ‘The Mouth of the Ganges’.
Mapmaker:
John Bayly (fl 1755-1783)
Bayly was born in about 1730 and apprenticed to Theophilus Spendelow on 16th October 1745, described as the son of John Bayly, yeoman of Somerton in Somerset. After Spenelow’s death Bayly served out the remainder of his time with Hannah Spendelow, the widow, and was made free on the testimony of the engravers Henry Yates and John Giblet 3rd December 1755. He was confined in Ludgate Prison for debt 25 September 1761 and was probably the John Bayly, engraver of Fleet Market, who features as the principal witness in a forgery trial at the Old Bailey 17th October 1783.
Bayly engraved a number of the maps that appeared in the published accounts of Cook’s first voyage in 1773.
