Description:
Rare engraving from the original edition of the Illustrated Sydney News of the site of first discovery of Kerosene-bearing shale.
On February 1865: Saul Samuel and R.J. went to visit the Sydney office of William Graham, of Graham & Mulholland, Commission Agents, and show him a phial of crude kerosene oil produced from shale found on his property at Mount Kembla. Graham apparently had no knowledge of the oil shale deposit prior to the visit of these gentlemen.
