Description:
A & C Black was and still is a British book publishing
company. It was originally founded in 1807 by Adam Black in Edinburgh but
eventually relocated to London. Most notably, A & C Black published the
7th, 8th and 9th editions of Encyclopædia Britannica. Now, the Encyclopædia Britannica is written
by about 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 contributors, who have
included 110 Nobel Prize winners and five American presidents.
In map terms though, the firm published a number of atlases
including: Black’s Atlas of North America 1854, Atlas of Australia Including
the Goldfields’ (1853), leading onto the most complete collection of finely
engraved country and region maps in Black’s General Atlas of the World, first
published in 1879, a Folio size volume containing 58maps, some of these
measuring 12″ x 15″ and some printed double size, making
spectacularly large pieces. Now the firm has become a part of Bloomsbury
Publishing and continues to publish.
