Rare true first edition of this very detailed early county map from John Cary’s atlas, identified by the address ‘Arundel Street, Strand’. Cary produced numerous further edition’s of this popular atlas for nearly 45 years, the last edition being as late as 1831. Cary was one of the most important and active map makers of the period.
The map title is set on a compass rose, with Cary’s name and a scale of ‘British Statue Miles‘ below. Roads, towns and forests are marked. The map is accompanied with a page of descriptive text providing information on distances between towns, eminent families, rivers and the type of industries and farming.

John Cary (1755 - 1835)
Cary was a mapmaker born in Wiltshire, England, his father a malster and churchwarden. Cary was appointed Surveyor of Roads to the General Post Office 1794. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Arts 1804 for his large scale map of Cardingshire. His Strand premises burned down 17th January 1820 and which was continued by his sons at 86 St. James.
