Scarce colonial engraving
The Chinese’ colonists, so generally looked upon as inoffensive industrious race, uproar when circumstances arise, to be subject, .to, the dire spirit of revenge which, exists amongst the outer barbarians when smarting under injuries. A few weeks ago. a serious disturbance took place at the farm J. Mc Davey, Mount Cameron. Several Chinamen had been engaged to assist in harvest operations, and during the progress of the work, says the Majorca Independent, one of the hands, a coloured man, had cause to find fault with one of the Chinamen, and upon the latter remonstrating he was struck in the face by the person alluded to, and knocked down.’ When work was finished, for, the day, the Chinamen as usual kindled a large fire and commenced preparations for. their meal. The disagreeableness of the early portion of the day had evidently not worn off, for somehow the Chinamen got into there clutches the coloured man before mentioned, and in an instant he was put upon the fire by them. His cries for assistance wore promptly replied to by a number of Europeans, who immediately rushed upon the scene, seizing all the available weapons of offence they could lay hands on. The Chinamen relinquished their prey, who escaped with slight injury, but it was not until firearms wore produced and the Chinamen threatened with a taste from them that peace was restored.
