Description:
Etching of Clayton Wesley Uniting Church, formerly Clayton Congregational Church, on the corner of Portrush Rd and The Parade by Gayfield Shaw.
The etching is of the extended church. When a larger church building was called for, to be erected in front of the existing building. A design by Cumming & Davies for a building 66 by 50 feet seating 560 people was accepted and the foundation stone was laid by E. T. Smith on 27 June 1882. The building was completed and officially opened on 17 May 1883. The spire, at 125 feet (38 m) was the tallest in the colony.
Gayfield Shaw (1885 - 1961)
Shaw was a commercial gallery director, and one of the most prominent members of the Sydney art scene during the early boom period in Australian visual art following the end of the First World War. He was also a skilled printmaker who took a leading role in establishing the nation's first etching society.
