Description:

Scarce, c.19th cased map of London by George Frederick Crutchley (1797-1880)

Although dated January, 1st 1825 at the bottom of the map, Crutchley often issued updated editions without changing the original publication date. The map includes a number of railway lines that were opened up to c.1847. He also moved to 81 Fleet Street, London in 1830 and remained at that address until 1876.

One of Cruchley’s scarcer circular pocket maps, and the survival of the original slipcase in good condition substantially enhances its desirability.

George Frederick Cruchley (1797 - 1880)

One of the foremost British cartographers, engravers and map publishers of the Victorian period. Born in 1797, he was apprenticed to the eminent cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith, from whom he acquired the technical skills and commitment to accuracy that would distinguish his own publications. Establishing his business in London in 1823, he initially traded from Ludgate Street before moving in 1834 to 81 Fleet Street, where his firm remained for much of its existence.

Cruchley became renowned for producing practical, up-to-date maps for travellers, merchants and the rapidly expanding railway market. His output included county maps, road maps, town plans, railway guides, educational atlases and detailed plans of London, all characterised by clear engraving, careful revision and excellent portability. In 1844 he purchased a large portion of the stock and copperplates of the celebrated mapmaker John Cary, enabling him to revise and republish many of Cary's finest maps while expanding his own catalogue. Throughout the mid-nineteenth century Cruchley continually updated his maps to record new roads, railways, postal routes and administrative boundaries, making them among the most accurate commercial maps available.

His plans of London are particularly significant, documenting the city's transformation during the railway age. Successive editions recorded the opening of new railway termini, suburban expansion and improvements to the capital's transport infrastructure, providing an invaluable cartographic record of Victorian London's rapid growth.

Cruchley retired from business in 1877, when his stock and engraved copperplates were sold at auction. Many were subsequently acquired by Gall & Inglis of Edinburgh, who continued issuing revised editions into the late nineteenth century. Today, Cruchley's maps are highly regarded for their accuracy, fine engraving and historical importance, particularly his pocket maps and railway editions, which rank among the finest commercial cartographic productions of Victorian Britain.
