Description:
Rare engraving of colonial fireman.
Contemporary account of the march;
‘One of the principal features of the recent fire brigade gathering in Sydney was the imposing torch-light procession on the evening of the 8th of November, in
which about 2000 firemen, many from Victoria, took part. The crowd was enormous, but good order was preserved, no accident being reported. The procession
was headed by Mr. Torning, as marshal. The procession, starting from the Haymarket, passed down George Street, round Circular Quay, up Macquarie Street, through King Street, and up Pitt Street, back to the starting point, the thoroughfares being filled with multitudes of excited spectators.’
