Description:
Shows Edinburgh during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots. The walled Old Town with its tall tenement buildings encircled by medieval walls lies below the Citadel & the Cathedral of St.Giles, with its distinctive crowned spire, is visible mid-centre. The Palace of Holyrood, ransacked during the English raids at the end of Henry VIII’s reign, lies just outside the City Walls. George Braun (1541-1622) & Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World) revolutionised the view of the world when it was first published. It included over 450 town plans with all their buildings depicted, and to add further interest costumed figures occupy the foreground of most of the engravings.
Franz Hogenberg (1541 - 1622)
Hogenberg was a Flemish and German painter, engraver, and mapmaker, born in Mechelen a. In 1568 he was banned from Antwerp by the Duke of Alva and travelled to London, where he stayed a few years before emigrating to Cologne. He is best known for his work on the monumental series of town views, Civitates orbis terrarium. Georg Braun (1541-1622) Braun was the principal editor of Civitates orbis terrarium, he acquired the tables, hired the artists, and wrote the texts.
