Description:
Rare colonial engraving of Edward Trickett the champion sculler.
Trickett was an English–born professional sculler who competed in races throughout Australia, New Zealand and England. He was a champion sculler who won the Australian Professional Sculling Championship in 1876, 1877, 1878, 1885 and 1886. He also won the New Zealand Professional Sculling Championship in 1878 and 1879. He is remembered today in Sydney, Australia, not only for his sculling achievements but also for the Trickett Memorial Regatta which is held each year on the Parramatta River.
He was the first Australian to be recognised as a world champion in any sport, after winning the World Sculling Championship in 1876, a title he held until 1880, when he was beaten by Canadian Ned Hanlan.
