Description:
Very rare lithograph of the historic 1870’s floods in New South Wales.
In the 1860s Mary Girard (d. 1876), widow of Francis Girard (1791-1859), acquired Lismore Station on the Richmond River. The Girard family also acquired Dungarubba, on the lower Richmond, as a cattle run.
Contemporary account:
There has been sad havoc among the herds of Messrs. Girrard, at Dunganabba station they counted 1300 head of cattle drowned, and expect to find their loss amount to 2000 head among the number were several valuable bulls. 650 were found in one heap, and 47 carcases were taken out of the framework of a house in course of erection. There is great privation among the free selectors.
