Gauhar Jan

Rare large format matchbox label of the Indian singer, Gauhar Jaan (born Angelina Yeoward, 26 June 1873 – 17 January 1930). She was from Calcutta and was one of the first performers to record music on 78 rpm records in India, and released by Gramophone Company of India, designed and published in Sweden.

With the rapid growth of matchbox production at the start of the 20th century, label design became the key differential point between brands. This importance of branding acted as the catalyst to the creation of innovative and important label designs, with many influencing both the design and topography industry for years to come.
