Description:
Rare c.19th hand coloured engraving of the Hawthorn branch of the English, Scottish, and Australia Chartered Bank, now known as the Manresa People’s Centre.
It was designed in 1873 and constructed shortly thereafter. It was designed by the architect Leonard Terry of Melbourne. It was the first bank established in middle Hawthorn. The two-story structure originally housed the banking chamber and offices on the ground floor, with a “handsome suite of apartments” for the bank manager located at the rear and on the first floor.
From the original edition of the Australasian Sketcher.
