Description:

Elaborately decorated c.18th map of the eastern hemisphere showing Australia and New Zealand according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages of exploration in 1642-4 and with an imaginary east coast extending from Van Diemen’s Land to New Guinea. This depiction of the Australian continent was promoted by the French School of Theoretical Geography of which Nicholas Bellin the royal cartographer was involved in and who was held in high regard. Louis Brion De La Tour (1756 - 1803)

Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1803) was a French cartographer and geographer active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and produced a number of important maps and atlases, many of which were used in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is considered one of the most important French cartographers of his time.
