Biography:
William Hatherell (1855-1928)
Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell’s, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia,as well as The Graphicand other American magazines.
This view is one of a series made in anticipation of Australia’s centenary.
William Lionel Wyllie (1851 – 1931)
Marine painter, illustrator & etcher, he studied at the RA Schools & learnt the art of boat building. His pictures of shipping in the Thames are amongst the best and accurate that exist. He was a marine artist on the Graphic and made Marine Painter to the Royal Yatch Squadron.
