Description:
Early chart based on Cook’s map from his second voyage account of New Caledonia and Vanuatu with inset of Norfolk Island. Bonne was a celebrated French map maker born in the village of Raucourt in the Ardennes and died in Paris in 1794. He produced Atlas Encyclopedique in 1781 many of the maps relating to Australia and the Pacific are based on Cook’s discoveries.
Mapmaker:
Rigorbet Bonne ( 1727-1794)
Bonne was an important French cartographer active in the later part of the C18th.
In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. His maps represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the C17th and early C18th towards a more detailed oriented and practical aesthetic.
