Rare, c.19th hand coloured engraving of the Kent Group.

The islands are a group of six granite islands located in Bass Strait and were named by Matthew Flinders, “in honour of my friend captain William Kent, then commander of Supply” when Flinders passed them on 8 February 1798 in the Francis on her way back to Sydney.

Robert Bruce (1838 - 1918)

Born in Dunblane, Scotland, on 14 September 1838, Bruce emigrated to Australia by 1865, where he established himself as a prominent wood-engraver, in Melbourne and New South Wales. During the late 1860s and early 1870s, he operated from a professional studio at 83 Swanston Street in Melbourne. His work often involved collaborating with other colonial artists to translate their sketches into printable engravings. His illustrations were frequently featured in major colonial publications of the time, including the Illustrated Australian News, where he provided visual records of local events and landscapes. His work is now preserved in several major institutions, including the Art Gallery of South Australia and the State Library Victoria, serving as a primary visual record of early Australian life. He remained active in the artistic community until his death on 28 June 1918, in Fitzroy, Melbourne.
