Description:
Double hemisphere world map after Nicholas Sanson by Giovanni de Rossi the Roman cartographer. This is the first edition of this map from his, "Mercurio Geographico". Australia and New Zealand are shown with the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his first (1642-3) and second voyages (1644). Antarctica is named Terra Magellanica Australe Incognita. The map is dated 1674 at bottom. Rossi published a second edition of this atlas in 1784 and in that edition there are no changes to the cartography of Australia.
