Description:

Double hemisphere world map after Nicholas Sanson by Giovanni de Rossi the Roman cartographer. This is the first edition of this map from his, &quotMercurio Geographico&quot. Australia and New Zealand are shown with the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his first (1642-3) and second voyages (1644). Antarctica is named Terra Magellanica Australe Incognita. The map is dated 1674 at bottom. Rossi published a second edition of this atlas in 1784 and in that edition there are no changes to the cartography of Australia.
