The rare unfolded first issue of De Fer’s double hemisphere world map surrounded by medallion portraits of famous explorers; Pere Tachard, La Salle, Dampier, Magellan, Drake, Columbus, Vespucci, Marco Polo and Schouten. Australia is shown according to the discoveries made by Abel Tasman on his two voyages of exploration 1742-44 and California is shown as an island.
This map was reissued later, in De Fer’s ‘Atlas Curieux‘ in 1702, 1705, 1717, 1718, 1723 and 1725.
Nicholas De Fer (1646 - 1720)
Nicholas De Fer (1646-1720) Cartographer, engraver & publisher. A prolific map maker, he issued over 600 maps attaining a great reputation and was appointed Geographer to the King.
