Description:
Colonial engraving of Dan Morgan (1830-1865), the bushranger, born John Fuller. He was nicknamed “Mad Dog“, and was regarded in his time as “the most bloodthirsty ruffian that ever took to the bush in Australia”. After Morgan killed a trooper in July 1864, the Government of New South Wales put a £1,000 bounty on his head. He was shot and killed after holding up Peechelba Station, in Victoria.
Biography:
William Hatherell (1855-1928)
Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell’s, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for the Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic.
This view is one of a series made in anticipation of Australia’s centenary.
