Rare c.18th engraving of Hititi from the official British Admiralty sanctioned edition of the accounts of Cook’s second voyage.
Head and shoulders of a young man with curly hair and flattish nose, wearing a gown. Hititi (also called Oediddee, Oedidee, O’Hedidee, (Mahine) was a native, ‘about [17 or 18 years] of age’ from Bora Borea who was taken on board the Resolution at Raiatea on 17 September 1773; ‘he may be of use to us if we should fall in with and touch at any isles in our root to the west which was my only montive for taeking him on board.’ (Cook Journals II, 230.)
