Wilson was one of the first students at the Aldersgate School of Medicine, and won prizes for surgery and midwifery in the session 1829-1830. In 1831 he was asked by Quain to become his assistant. Wilson accepted the post and was soon afterwards appointed Demonstrator of Anatomy.
