Description:

Rare engraving of the Crescent snapper, collected by Mungo Park (11 September 1771 – 1806)  in Sumatra. Park was a Scottish explorer of the African continent. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River. Before his African expeditions, Park left on February 1793 on the Worcester and sailed to Benkulen in Sumatra. Before departing, Park wrote his friend Alexander Anderson in terms that reflect his Calvinist upbringing: My hope is Transactions of the Linnean Society, v. 3, published in 1797.
