Condition:

In near mint condition. The map is in excellent condition, linen-backed, with no splitting to the folds. The tape indicator mechanism is complete and functioning, secured by its original brass stud; the index pages lightly toned.

Technique:

Lithograph, dissected on linen and printed in colour. Bound in the publisher’s dark green cloth, the boards stamped with decorative borders, the front lettered “Philips’ Tape Indicator Map of London / George Philip & Son Ltd. London” within a ruled panel, spine lettered “Tape Map of London” with the original issue price “5/- Net” at the head.

Description:

Very detailed, early c.20th plan of London, produced by George Philip and Son.

A wonderful copy with the original tape indicator which is often missing. Includes 72pp containing an alphabetical listing of all streets, public buildings etc. Tram routes, underground and over ground railways are shown, and postal districts are defined. All major thoroughfares, public parks, commons, gardens, fields and grounds are coloured and highlighted. Map extent is from Peckham and Hackney in the east to Barnes and Willesden in the west.

A wonderful example Phillips cased map of London with tape-indicator, in which a graduated tape, fixed at the margin of the sheet, is read against a numbered grid to locate any entry in the accompanying alphabetical index This system originated with C. Smith & Son and was continued by George Philip & Son following their acquisition of the Smith’s map-publishing business in 1916.

The map depicts central London within a grid of quarter-mile reference squares, extending from the West End and royal parks eastward to Peckham and New Cross, with the Thames, principal thoroughfares, and the tramway, railway and underground network distinguished by colour.

George Philip (1799 - 1882)

Philip was a London geographical publisher, globe maker, and founder of the firm George Philip & Son. He started business in 1834 in Liverpool and from about 1848 he traded as "George Philip & Son" with his son and successor George Phillip II (1823-1902. Philip retired 1 July 1879 and the business was coninued by his son and nephew.
