Picton is located near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound near the north-east corner of the South Island of New Zealand. It is named after Sir Thomas Picton, the military associate of the Duke of Wellington, who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo.

Walter Bentley Woodbury (1834 - 1885)

Walter Bentley Woodbury (1834-1885) was an inventor and pioneering English photographer. He was an early photographer in Australia and the Dutch East Indies. Woodbury invented the Woodburytype photo process, which he patented in 1864. Between 1864 and 1885 Woodbury took out more than 30 patents in Britain and abroad for inventions relating to balloon photography, transparencies, sensitised films and improvements in optical lanterns and stereoscopy.
