Description:
Very decorative c.19th world map on Mercators’ Projection surrounded by numerous vignettes, a zodiac, Christ seated on a throne holding a cross with advancing European forces on his left and fleeing Muslims on his right. Antarctica is shown with the highest volcano, Mount Erebus, discovered January 27, 1841 by Sir James Clark Ross while it was erupting. He named it and its companion, Mount Terror, after his ships, Erebus and Terror.

Victor Levasseur (1800 - 1870)
French cartographer and surveyor. He was attached to the Cadastral Survey of the city of Paris and is best known for his Atlas National des Departments et des Possessions de la France in which all the maps are beautifully embellished.
