Description:

Rare colonial engraving of R.N. Russell and Co.s railway rolling stock factory, Barker and Duncan Streets, Sydney.

The large building just erected by the Messrs. P. N. Russell and Co., as a workshop for the exclusive manufacture of railway rolling stock, has its principal frontage in Barker-street, immediately opposite the extensive premises occupied by the same firm as a foundry and general engineering works. In length it extends back as far as Duncan-street, a distance of 268 feet, and is 76 feet in width throughout its entire length. The building consists of a ground and upper floor, the former being 16 feet in height from the ground to underside of floor joists, the latter 14 feet from the floor level to the iron tie rods of roof, and about 28 feet to the top of ventilator. The principal fronts In Barker and Duncan streets are built of brick on stone foundations, and are similar in design, each , for having on the ground story four circular arched doors or gateways 9 feet 6 inches wide, furnished with glazed J. sliding doors ; over each archway and in the upper story are two coupled circular-headed windows.
