Russell Vale, near Wollongong.

Very rare, c.19th hand coloured engraved view of the Wollongong suburb of Russel Vale.

The area was initially part of a 1827 land grant promised to Harriett Overington, which later passed to Robert and Charles Campbell. The suburb’s name originates from the 250-acre estate of Francis Peter MacCabe, a surveyor who named his property after his mother’s maiden name, Russell. His homestead was built by prominent local stonemason Patrick Lahiff.
