Esculapius was the illegitimate son of the nymph Coronis, by Apollo. The mother, at the instigation of Apollo, was slain by Diana but the child was spared. He became noted for his wonderful curative powers. He healed all diseases, and even restored the dead to life. He was called &quotThe Good Physician.&quot He was struck by a thunderbolt and ascended to heaven. The Greeks worshiped him.
