Scarce colonial engraving of splitters working on large log.

Walter Sydney Stacey (1846 - 1929)

Walter Sydney Stacey (1846-1929) British artist and illustrator. Born in Stockwell, London in 1846, he was educated at the Royal Academy Schools, where he began exhibiting 1872. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Newlyn Art Gallery. He was married to Amy Stacey, and had three daughters and three sons, one of which Walter Stacey (1882-?) also became an artist. Often credited as 'W.S. Stacey' in his illustrative work, he was briefly a member of the Society of British Artists, before resigning and joining the Old Dudley Art Society. He died in 1929
