Description:
Very rare lithograph from Westmacott’s 1838 series Six Views which were drawn on stone by Gauci and not to be confused with the later 1848 series titled Sketches in Australia which were drawn on stone by Spreat. The view is taken from the north shore looking towards Goat Island and Sydney Cove (Circular Quay) which should be on the left of Goat Island not on the right as shown. This would have occurred because the lithographer, Gauci, failed to draw Westmacott’s image in reverse when drawing it onto the lithographic stone.
Capt. Robert Westmacott (1801 - 1870)
Sketcher, army officer and pioneer. He is best known for his sketches in Australia, a series of views of Sydney and rural New South Wales. Settling north Bulli he bred horses and was said to have discovered and surveyed the road now called Bulli Pass.
