In 1920 the League of Nations granted Australia a mandate to govern former German New Guinea. The next year Australia formally accepted the mandate and began civil administration. This is when the League of Nations mandate began. The civil administration was suspended in 1941 following the Japanese invasion during World War II. In 1949 the Territory of Papua and New Guinea was established as an administrative union under a United Nations Trust Territory.
