Description:
Colonial engraving of a massacre in Fiji in 1876 soon after the annexation by Australia of Fiji.
A party of men from the Nabutautan, Wairoro, and Na Qaqa tribes attacked the village of Tatubo, near the commissioner’s camp at Na ‘ Saucoko. The houses of this place were burnt, and the old men, women, and children took refuge in a cave, whereupon the assailants commenced firing into the cave upon the defenseless occupants. Upon this being communicated to Mr. Commissioner Carew, he at once dispatched to the scene of action a party of 60 native constables, who, attacking them with great spirit, routed them in a few minutes, killing the notorious chief Nabiske and many others, and then drove the remainder well over into the Na Qaqa lands.
