Description:
Rare engraving of the proposed new law courts designed by James Barnett that was to be built on the land occupied by the District Court, Immigration Barracks at the top of King-street, which street would be opened into the Domain by a gateway similar to that opposite St. Mary’s Cathedral. The building would have been an imposing sight seen from the Domain on one side and Hyde Park and College Street on the other.
The designed intended that the building would be isolated, and bounded on all sides by streets. The plan covered an area of about 500 feet long by 270 feet wide, and provide accommodation for six courts;, banco, jury, equity, divorce, . insolvency and district, as well as a law library and chambers. The entrances to the whole would be under spacious porticos and corridors on all sides to a central hall 125 feet by 60 feet, and 70 feet high.
