Description:
Scarce, c.19th hand coloured engraved view of the principal façade of Trinity College, Royal Parade, Parkville, forming part of the collegiate group associated with the University of Melbourne.
The building is a significant example of Gothic Revival collegiate architecture in Australia and reflects the mid c.19th ambition to transplant the architectural and educational ideals of Oxford and Cambridge to the colonies. Designed by the English born architect William Wardell, one of the foremost ecclesiastical and institutional architects working in Australia, the college exhibits the characteristic elements of Victorian Gothic Revival: steeply pitched roofs, pointed-arched windows, buttressed walls, and carefully composed massing. Constructed in bluestone with contrasting dressings, the façade conveys both solidity and refinement, appropriate to an Anglican residential college intended to combine religious formation with academic life.
