Scarce, late c.18th engraved French edition views of: Three views of the Admiralty Isles. Joseph Freewills Islands, Current Island, St. Andrews Islands, bay at south end of Mindanao.
Philip Carteret coastal views of Joseph Freewills Islands, (Mapia Atoll), Indonesian, Current Island, St. Andrews Islands, bay at south end of Mindanao, Philippines.
The print is frequently, though incorrectly, attributed to James Cook, a misconception arising from its inclusion in John Hawkesworth’s Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de Sa Majesté Britannique actuellement régnante, the authoritative continental edition of the official narratives of the voyages of four explorers; Byron, Wallis, Carteret and Cook. As Cook’s portion of the published accounts is the most famous they are colloquially called ‘Cook’s first voyage’. The views reflects Carteret’s independent surveying work during his circumnavigation of 1766–69.
