Early engraving from the series, Antiquities D’Herculanum, illustrating the most beautiful ancient paintings, and marbles, bronzes and furniture found in excavations of Herculaneum and Stabia Pompe. The discovery in 1738 and 1748 of the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii gave new impetus to the study of archeology.

Artist:

Francois Anne David (1741-1824)

David was a French engraver born in Paris in 1741, where he lived and worked all his life. He was a pupil of Le Bas, and became engraver to the King of Prussia. He was member of the Royal Academy of Painting in Berlin, as well as of the Academy of Sciences and Letters at Rouen. He died in Paris in 1824.
