Rare and early colonial engraving of Newmarket, Auckland taken from a watercolour by John Barr Clark Hoyte (1853-1913). The extensive view is looking over Newmarket and Parnell, with a large tree in the left foreground, houses, streets, churches, the harbour and Rangitoto. The left-hand spired building is St. Mary’s Church, built 1860, that on the right is Bishopscourt, St. Stephens Ave., Parnell. The house to the right of Bishopscourt is the “Master’s House” of the Church of England Grammar School. (Kinder’s house). Reference: National Library Wellington; Ref C-052-006
