Description:

Rare colonial engraving of the punt across the Wakool River.

Henry Talbett arrived in the Wakool area in 1836, and established a punt across the river in 1841. The ferry operated for several decades, and the crossing became known as Wakool Crossing. Talbett eventually built a store, a post office and a hotel on the site, and the small community developed into a thriving river port. In 1871, the town of Kyalite was established on the site of Wakool Crossing.
