Antique maps of Scotland document the country’s complex physical landscape and evolving political geography, from early European representations to systematic county surveys of the 19th century. Among the most influential early works are the county maps of Timothy Pont, later revised and published by Joan Blaeu in his celebrated Atlas Novus, which remains one of the most important cartographic achievements in Scottish history.

Later cartographers including John Speed, Herman Moll and John Thomson produced detailed maps recording highland estates, island groups, military roads and coastal approaches. The mapping of Scotland’s western islands — including the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland — presents a particularly rich collecting area, with many maps reflecting the strategic and navigational importance of these remote regions.
