Antique maps of Germany reflect the complex and fragmented political geography of the German states across five centuries, from the Holy Roman Empire to the unified German nation of the 19th century. The region produced many of history’s most influential cartographers and publishers, including the Homann family of Nuremberg, Matthias Seutter and Tobias Conrad Lotter, whose finely engraved and richly decorated maps are among the most collectible in European cartography.
Earlier Dutch and Flemish publishers including Blaeu, Hondius and Jansson also produced important representations of the German territories, often reflecting contested borders and the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War. Later 19th-century mapping documented the consolidation of Prussia and the German states, providing detailed records of railway networks, administrative boundaries and urban development.
Original antique maps of Germany are prized for their engraving quality, historical significance and the insight they provide into one of Europe’s most consequential regions. The Antique Print & Map Room maintains a strong holding of German cartography for collectors, researchers and institutions.
