He founded the firm of A & K Johnston starting as a printer in 1825. The firm published a “National Atlas” and a “Royal Atlas” which included much new information especially in the newly settled colonies in the Southern Hemisphere. Recent discoveries inland in many colonies were now noted for the first time on many of their maps.
