An impressive rotating star-finder planisphere for latitude 35°S, the standard reference latitude making it particularly suitable for use in Australia, New Zealand, and southern Africa, published by George Philip & Son.
To find the part of the Heavens visible at any stated time, revolve the movable disc till the day of the month marked upon its edge corresponds with the time of day shown on the outside of the Horizon.
It is made of a two-part construction: a fixed outer disc with calendar/hour ring and gilt title on black, rotating inner disc printed with the southern night sky.
This is a German-printed example carrying the full letterpress explanatory text rather than the publisher’s advertisement seen on some German-printed copies.
Philip was a London geographical publisher, globe maker, and founder of the firm George Philip & Son. He started business in 1834 in Liverpool and from about 1848 he traded as "George Philip & Son" with his son and successor George Phillip II (1823-1902. Philip retired 1 July 1879 and the business was coninued by his son and nephew.
