Scarce engraving of the Vale of Clwydd Colliery owned by Thomas Saywell and John Garsed which began operations in June 1868.
It was located in Browns Gap, which connects Hartley Valley and the part of Lithgow Valley now known as Vale of Clwydd. In October 1872, the Vale of Clwydd and Lithgow Valley Coal Mining and Copper Smelting Company sought shareholders via a prospectus to fund a new project. Their intention was to operate on the ridge between Hartley and Lithgow Valleys, using their mine’s coal to process copper ores. The main shaft was dug starting in 1873, reaching the Lithgow Coal Seam at a depth of 67 meters by August 1874. The mine operated until 1957.
