Johannes Honter’s Rudimenta Cosmographica is among the most influential small-format world maps of the Renaissance. First published at Cracow in 1530, the work was substantially revised for the Zürich edition of 1546, from which the present example derives.

The world map is engraved on a cordiform (heart-shaped) projection based on Martin Waldseemüller’s world map of 1507, with influence from Peter Apian. Honter, who studied alongside Apian at Vienna before establishing a printing press at Kronstadt (Brașov), combined established cartographic models with the latest geographical scholarship.

Its geography reflects European knowledge following Magellan’s circumnavigation. South America is shown as a separate continent divided from Asia by the Pacific Ocean, while North America remains incomplete with speculative coastlines. Africa is depicted in a recognisably modern form, and Asia largely follows the Ptolemaic tradition supplemented by Portuguese discoveries.

The woodcut is executed in a clear, restrained style suited to its educational purpose, with minimal decorative embellishment. Beneath the map is a page of explanatory Latin text introduced by a historiated initial, typical of the Zürich editions.

Honter’s Universalis Cosmographia, was later recognised by Abraham Ortelius among the principal authorities cited in the Catalogus Auctorum of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
