Description:
C19th engraving of the Legless Bird of Paradise.
Common name : Legless Bird of Paradise
Modern binomial name : Paradisaea Apoda
First described : Linnaeus 1758
The Greater Bird of Paradise is found in the lowland and hill forests of southwest New Guinea and Aru Islands, Indonesia. Carolus Linnaeus named the species Paradisaea apoda, or “legless bird-of-paradise”, because early trade-skins to reach Europe were prepared without feet by the natives, this led to the misconception that these birds were beautiful visitors from paradise that were kept aloft by their plumes and never touched the earth until death.
Artist:
Neville Cayley (1853 – 1903)
Born in England, Cayley was noted for his superb paintings of birds which he exhibited both in Australia and internationally. In 1892, he was awarded a gold medal at the Chicago Exposition for his paintings of Australian birds. Amusingly, when he traveled around the Australian countryside in search of new species of birds to draw, Cayley would often pay his hosts by painting pictures. Alongside the well-known British ornithologist John Gould, Cayley inspired many colonial settlers to take an interest in native Australian birds. He is represented in numerous institutional collections.
