Description:
Rare, large early c.19th hand coloured engraved map, showing a completed Australian coastline and including Bass Strait based on the discoveries made by Nicholas Baudin and Matthew Flinders on their important voyages of discovery and exploration.
The map includes George Bass and Matthew Flinders charting of Bass Strait and Van Diemen’s Land. The colouring as noted in the colour key at lower right denotes the historical discoveries made by the English, French and Dutch.
Although Matthew Flinders had been the first to chart the entire continent, his imprisonment at Mauritius by the French enabled the Baudin expedition to publish the accounts of their voyage and issue the first complete chart of Australia in 1811.
